Just look at how the genre has flourished on Instagram: Tons of artists with hundreds of thousands of followers have, for the last few years, been showing their huge audiences new ways to think about love, sex, and intimacy—often at the risk of getting their accounts deleted for being in violation of Instagram's anti-nipple community guidelines. Erotic art has been around forever, which may feel like an exaggeration but isn't too far off. Instagram has taken over our lives. It seems it has even entered one of the most private, and yet most talked about topics, sexuality. We made a little selection of our favorite erotic art accounts on Instagram and asked the artists behind what inspires them, what they think about feminism and how Social Media influence the way they work. With very sensuous and dark, twisted characters, French artist Apollonia Saintclair gives us goosebumps every time we visit her account. What made you want to draw erotic pictures in the first place? How did it all start? Sex is a beautiful playground to show humanity. There was no real beginning; I simply followed my inclination to discover and show secret, hidden, intimate things. Drawing is about telling a story using every dot, every line to suggest something in the mind of the viewer.

Taking as her starting point heterosexual pornography, Tompkins reclaims the medium, taking a genre typically conceived as a vehicle for subverting women, and uses it to create direct, powerful, and empowering works that are distinctly feminist. Appropriating pornographic imagery, Tompkins recasts it through an artistic lens and creates masterfully crafted paintings that assume control of and reframe the subject matter. The centerpiece of the exhibition at Gavlak will be WOMEN Words, Phrases, and Stories an installation of 1, paintings of words that Tompkins received in response to an email request for words that describe women. Tompkins received more than 3, responses to her initial query, with the most common words sent in response being cunt, bitch, slut and mother. Tompkins then installed the paintings in a confined yet fluid network, creating conversations between them, some humorous, some disturbing.
