In this volume, Albert Hirschman reconstructs the intellectual climate of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to illuminate the intricate ideological transformation that occurred, wherein the pursuit of material interests–so long condemned as the deadly sin of avarice–was assigned the role of containing the unruly and destructive passions of man.
Hirschman here offers a new interpretation for the rise of capitalism, one that emphasizes the continuities between old and new, in contrast to the assumption of a sharp break that is a common feature of both Marxian and Weberian thinking. Among the insights presented here is the ironical finding that capitalism was originally supposed to accomplish exactly what was soon denounced as its znd feature: To portray this lengthy ideological change as an endogenous process, Hirschman draws on the writings of a large number of thinkers, including Montesquieu, Sir James Steuart, and Adam Smith.
Featuring a new afterword by Jeremy Adelman and a foreword by Amartya Sen, this Princeton Classics edition of The Passions and the Interests sheds light on the intricate ideological transformation from which capitalism emerged triumphant, and reaffirms Hirschman’s stature as one of our most influential and provocative thinkers. Keohane, Journal of Interdisciplinary History.
Hirschman was one of the leading intellectuals of the twentieth century, renowned for his contributions to economics, the social sciences, and the history of ideas. Albert Hirschmann is probably better tthe for his ‘Exit, Voice, and Loyalty, but this book, ‘The Passions and the Interests’ provide insights into Hirschmann’s grappling with hurschman international economic problem of uneven development passionss poverty. Hirschmann was an economist when the non-soviet and soviet spheres competed for domination over the decolonialized nations after WWII.
Much of his work attempted to explain why 3rd world nations were unable to achieve satisfactory economic development. In the ‘Passions and the Interests,’ Hirschmann addresses human foibles related to the problem of political psychology as one can discern from Machiavelli’s work.

Political Arguments for Capitalism Before Its Triumph” is an essay as insightful and thought-provoking as it is elegant.
Of course, before the dawn of capitalism, the pursuit of economic interests is considered one of the worst passions; avarice is a foe of the Platonic conception of Reason and the Christian view of the Truth. Nevertheless, with the decline of feudalism and the rise of absolutist monarchies, the great concern of thinkers like Hobbes is the rising power of the state and the passions that lead monarchs and their states into ruinous external and civil wars.
In this context, the pursuit of wealth is transformed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries into the pursuit of material interest.
Two eighteen century thinkers at the center of this argument are Montesquieu and Sir James Steuart. The former proposes that a laissez-faire economy softens and refines the passionate and violent excesses of man: Overall, the pursuit of individual interest is assigned the role of a mid-way countervailing force, a force that contains the passions of humanity, and particularly the passions of political leaders. Put another way, making money is no longer considered a purposeful bulwark against excess, but an ironic and unseen force of social stability and peacefulness.
In the interetss, Hirschman provides a salutary lesson for the history of ideas: Hirschman, in other words, is a voice for moderation and mindfulness.
Instead of simply oscillating between one extreme and the other, we should recognize that our hirschmna discontent may in fact be the result of attempts to resolve older problems, and that by abandoning current policies we may unwittingly return to an older but nevertheless still unsatisfactory paradigm.
